'Burnt Bottom' Tomatoes

My joy with the four tomatoes growing nicely on one of my tomato plants is in question right now.

I spotted 'burnt bottom' on two of the tomatoes. So weird!

The other two are so far so good. Too much fertiliser? Too little water? Too much sun (which I doubt)? A kind of disease?

I am clueless.

If you have any ideas why and how this happened and what I can do to prevent this, please feel free to share.

  2. I think this is called 'blossom end' rot. You can google and find the recommendations. Good Luck and wishing you a nice weekend!

  3. Blossom-end Rot. Here what the book says. Another plant problem caused by environmental conditions, blossom-end rot is caused by a lack of calcium in the soil. Exceptionally dry conditions can make calcium unavailable to plants. Excessive amounts of high-nitrogen fertiliser can do the same thing.

  4. I've got no idea at all until I read Diana's comment! Interesting!
My cherry tomatoes are finally showing small little fruits! Ya-hoo!!! (I have this fear that they will drop off anytime now! couldn't help it!)

  5. milka, the other 2 tomatoes are ok, no sign of bottom rot so far.

AB & MK girl, thanks for informing me what this is. Have not heard of it but glad to know something new. I will read more and hopefully can try to do smthg to prevent more such rots in future.

kf, the cherry tomatoes won't drop off. no need to worry.

  6. We bought 12 tomato plants and they are in containers. The first batch were great but the second bunch that are riping the bottoms are burnt i don't undersand why this is happening. Could it be the fertiliser my husband is using?
